The raw materials for petroleum resin production primarily come from byproducts of petroleum refining, specifically the C5 and C9 fractions produced by petroleum cracking. These fractions contain a range of hydrocarbons, such as olefins and diolefins.

1. C5 Fraction: Primarily derived from byproducts of petroleum cracking, this fraction primarily contains C5 olefins, such as isoprene and piperylene.

2. C9 Fraction: Primarily derived from heavy hydrocarbons produced during petroleum cracking, this fraction primarily includes monomers and mixtures containing nine carbon atoms, such as styrene, methyl styrene, indene, benzoindene, and other aromatic compounds.

In addition to the above raw materials, catalysts are used to promote the polymerization reaction during the production of petroleum resin. Common catalysts include sulfuric acid, anhydrous aluminum chloride, and boron trifluoride. These catalysts play a key role in the polymerization process, promoting the polymerization of olefins. Through a series of process steps such as pretreatment, polymerization, and flash evaporation, different types of petroleum resin products can be finally obtained, which are used in rubber, adhesives, coatings, papermaking, ink and other industries.
