FAQ
Q: We have been using n-butyl acetate (NBAC) all along. If we switch to sec butyl acetate (SBAC), will my formula need to be significantly modified? Will the quality of the paint film decrease?
A: Basically no big changes are needed, it is an ideal equivalent substitute. SBAC has extremely similar polarity to n-butyl ester, and its compatibility with resins such as nitrocellulose paint and polyurethane is almost identical.
The key point is that although SBAC has a faster volatilization rate of about 20-30%, it performs extremely well in the 'leveling window period' during the later stage of coating drying. Not only does it not reduce the quality of the paint film, but its lower surface tension actually helps the paint film to be smoother and have higher glossiness.
We suggest that you conduct a 30% -50% partial substitution test first, as you will usually find a slight decrease in viscosity and better workability.
Q: Compared to n-butyl ester, what are the other advantages besides price?
A: Price advantage is only one aspect, the core is comprehensive cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
A better viscosity reducing effect on resins. When reaching the same construction viscosity, you can add more solids or reduce the total amount of solvent used.
Lower water solubility. During the rainy season or in high humidity environments, it can effectively reduce the risk of paint film 'whitening' and lower the rate of defective products.
Q: How safe is this product? Is it environmentally compliant? Will the odor be strong?
A: Sec-butyl Acetate is a typical environmentally friendly solvent.
In the evaluation of the US EPA, it is listed as a non HAPs (harmful air pollutant) solvent with much lower toxicity than aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene. Its odor is lighter and lighter than n-butyl ester, with a slight fruity aroma that can significantly improve the working environment for workshop workers.
