Isobutanol is a common organic alcohol, which is colorless and has a slight special odor at room temperature. It's a preferred alternative to traditional straight chain alcohols in the fields of coatings, inks, resin synthesis, and as a fuel additive
The main product characteristics as below
Better hydrophobicity and low moisture absorption
The lower polarity brought by branched chains limits their solubility in water, resulting in better hydrophobic properties. Adding isobutanol to the formula can effectively reduce the sensitivity of the system to moisture, improve the water resistance and early rust prevention performance of the coating in humid environments, and reduce the corrosion tendency of metals such as carbon steel.
Low viscosity & Excellent frost resistance
The freezing point is about -108℃, what makes it can maintain good fluidity in a very low temperature. It's widely used in special cleaning agents, antifreeze, and aviation hydraulic fluid additives, to be used in extreme cold environments without worrying about freezing. Its low viscosity also help pumping and spraying.
Good reaction selectivity (as an intermediate)
The steric hindrance effect brought by its branched structure can provide different reaction rates and product selectivity compared to straight chain butanol in certain esterification or etherification reactions, and can be used to synthesize specialty chemicals with specific properties such as lower viscosity and higher hydrophobicity.

Application
Coatings and inks
As a solvent or cosolvent, it is used in nitrocellulose paint, alkyd resin paint, acrylic paint and printing ink to adjust the volatilization rate, improve leveling and reduce costs. Especially for ship paint, outdoor steel structure coatings, and industrial paints that require water resistance and whitening

Chemical intermediates
It is the key raw material in the production of isobutyl acrylate, isobutyl acetate, isobutyl ester plasticizers, etc. What are widely used in the polymer, coating, and plastic industries.

Industrial cleaning agents
Used for general degreasing and cleaning of metal parts.

Other
It can be used as an extractant and as an oxygen-containing additive in biofuels or gasoline to increase octane rating and reduce specific emissions.

FAQ
Q: In the formulation, how does Isobutanol affect the surface tension of the coating system and thus affect the wettability and leveling?
A: It has low surface tension, which can effectively reduce the surface tension of the whole coating system, thus improving the wettability of low surface energy substrates (such as plastics) and obtaining better leveling.
Q: In high temperature baking type coating, what is the contribution of its initial volatilization rate to prevent hole bursting?
A:Its moderate evaporation rate allows the coating to release solvent vapor in an orderly manner during the initial heating of the coating. If the evaporation is too fast, it will break through the paint film; if it is too slow, it will boil under heat. It balances the two and effectively reduces pinholes and pockmarks.
Q: How does 2-MethylpropanoI corrode common metal materials?
A: It is slightly corrosive to carbon steel. It is recommended to use stainless steel or polyethylene/polypropylene containers for long-term storage.
